Philip Morris Backs FDA's Tobacco Regulation
June 9th, 2009 | Author: adminSomething stinks, and it's pouring out of the fine print in the new tobacco legislation backed by Philip Morris giving the USFDA regulatory authority. Perhaps Philip Morris recognizes the monetary gains it stands to enjoy if the FDA limits the amount of nicotine allowed in tobacco cigarettes.
Consider this, if the nicotine level drops in cigarettes, then smokers will find themselves smoking more to receive the same amount. Rather than limit their intake of dangerous chemicals, they will be increasing it to get their nicotine fix. Legislation continues to avoid addressing the actual health risks of burning tobacco and dance around the fact that local governments depend on tobacco taxes to pad their budgets.
Smokers would be smart to start supporting nicotine replacement options. Unfortunately, the FDA is already seeking to regulate these alternative smoking methods. The voice of smokers is trying to be snuffed out before they're educated enough to speak up. The voice of over 40 million American smokers is frighteningly powerful and both Big Tobacco and the USFDA recognize this.
If you're currently a smoker, we urge you educate yourself about nicotine replacement therapies and even safer smoking methods. Get educated and stay informed. There are better, healthier alternatives to smoking.
